Certificate in Empowered School Board Governance

The Certificate in Empowered School Board Governance (ESBG) is one of the few microcredentials that not only provides a university-issued certificate but also serves as a pathway toward a full Master’s degree in Leadership Development.

Powered by

Developed in partnership between School Board Partners and Colorado State University Global, this program equips participants with foundational knowledge and practical, transferable skills to lead and advocate for meaningful reform within public education. Whether you're a community leader, district official, or school board member, ESBG prepares you to navigate complex governance structures and drive equity-focused change.

What You’ll Learn

Through nine comprehensive modules, participants will:

  • Understand the core roles and responsibilities of school board members

  • Explore strategic levers of power for effective governance

  • Develop skills to revise and create equity-centered school board policies

  • Use self-assessment tools to support continuous professional growth in equity-driven leadership

How It Works

The program includes a mix of virtual lectures, interactive discussion forums, scenario-based analyses, and reflective assignments. Each of the nine modules (2–3 hours each) builds toward your Empowered Governance Portfolio, which is submitted to CSU Global faculty for university credit.

Upon successful completion of all modules and assessments, participants receive the Certificate in Empowered School Board Governance—a valuable credential that also opens the door to pursuing a Master’s in Leadership Development.
